Ill start of by saying it may just be user error but It doesn’t seem to work to filter or clean my sand substrate like I was hoping, I do much better with a siphon and swirling method. On the huge plus side which is where I love this tool is doing water changes on my multiple large tanks. Easily pump the water right out then instead of having to pilour new water in you can pump a pail of fresh water in almost effortlessly.
Used this a total of 4 times and it does a pretty good job at suction and for changing water. In comparison with a Fluval Vaccum the require area that has to be underwater is about the same and yes it does remove debris and does an excellent job of sucking water out with the added advantage of being battery powered. Keep in mind the area needed to be submerged for this fully work is a bit longer than other vacuums and will limit what kind of tank you can use it in and how much area it can cover as if your tank isn’t deep enough it won’t be able to vacuum the area directly in the middle. Overall I definitely recommend it as anything making water changing easier is a quality of life improvement. For working functions, price, overall ease of use I highly recommend this!
Slow but steady and sure beats the old square siphon on larger tanks.
I should start this review by saying I’m a bit biased as I don’t use this product to “clean” tanks. I’ve gotten a similar product in the past and honestly these are just too clunky and awkward to use for actual cleaning when compared to a simple siphon hose.
So focusing on this specifically as a water change instrument, I couldn’t love this thing more. The internal battery is a game changer for me as I’m no longer dependent on an outlet, but given that it can run off an outlet is a nice backup. I’ve recently upgraded to a rack with soon-to-be 10+ tanks on it. I used to let gravity do the work and simply place a 5-gallon container on the top shelf, but that’s awkward and the back doesn’t like it much. This pump allows me to keep the container low while adding water to the tanks. I can clip the tube onto the rack, turn on the pump, and let it fill the tank.
I will say that I kind of wish I had chosen the 20W option instead but one of the nice parts about the 8W is that when adding water, with the different power levels it’s delicate enough that it won’t displace substrate and decorations when filling.
Knocking a star because as others have mentioned, the directions leave a lot to be desired. It is entirely too difficult to understand how things go together and it’s frustrating when assembling.
Decent flow rate with the 8W, but only when charged above 50%. I tried this out in my pool to vacuum the steps as a proof of concept and it worked great with the internal recirculation filter screen (video is included of this). There are a few reviews that mention confusion with using the product and it is very apparent they are connecting it wrong, but its not their fault as the instructions are vague.
Basically, you can either pump the water out as a traditional vacuum, but for smaller tanks, this will pump out water too quickly and drain the tank excessively. Alternatively, you can connect the recirculation filter/canister such that it will vacuum up debris into the filter, but the water will recirculate back into the tank. This works great in theory with larger debris (work well in my pool), but I imagine for finer detritus and silt that you find in aquariums, it might just stir it up in the water. Additionally, the overall contraption is slightly large as well, so best suited for a larger tank. At the end of the day, this would be a decent tool to replace a manual siphon if you have a larger tank (likely 50 gallons or up) with the added bonus of the recirculation filter should you be in a scenario to use it.
