OK, so we have a lot of fish tanks set up in the house and I was really excited to test out this product. At first, I was going to try to put it through a divider between our two axolotl tanks because axolotl needs sponge filters, but it wasn¡¯t quite going the way I wanted, so I decided to put it in the tank with Bob. Bob is currently chillin in this little tank because he was about to be eaten by our Oscar fish and I set up a small tank just for him, for now. I wanted to know how the filters actually worked, so I¡¯ve let it run for about a week. The fact that it¡¯s a new set up and only one fish with no cleaners in it, this thing works amazingly well. In fact, I might purchase it for other tanks as well. It keeps the water completely crystal clear it doesn¡¯t have any issues at all and it¡¯s pretty easy to set up. I was a little confused at the aeration portion of it and I definitely accidentally squirted water out of the tank numerous times during set up. That¡¯s just a good heads up for you. When you¡¯re setting it up make sure the nozzle where the water comes back out is like underwater or not aiming over the top of your tank. Otherwise it¡¯s super easy to use definitely worth the money. It¡¯s quiet and I will definitely be purchasing more.
I’ve got a 40 gallon breeder tank that’s about six months old. I’m still playing around with how I want to work out the filtration and other things. I upgraded to this new USB-powered filter in M (15-55 gallon tanks) to replace an air-driven one that I had gotten to replace an air stone. I liked the directional water movement feature on this and the extra power.
I’m not new to the hobby; started out in my teens in the 80’s. There are a lot of choices out there, and new information we’re learning every day about fish keeping. The most important component is water quality. I’ve always liked the idea of having another backup filter to our hang on back system. These types of filters are great because if you’re going to use an air stone or move water in some way, you might as well get one that filters at the same time. Everything in our tank has a job! From the dragon stones and other decor, which give hiding places and comfort to our shrimps and fry, to our plants that also hide creatures AND filter the water. Even our snails work! ;o)
The directional air movement exceeded my expectations. It’s powerful and flexible. You can change the speed/force by twisting the air nozzle that remains at the top. It’s really an ingenious system. As large as it is, and it is large, I have hidden it very well behind some large dragon stones. You can see the prefilter sponges in one of the photos, and I’m okay with that for now. The sponges are more closed cell than I like for my hang on back filters, but because this is just extra, I can work with it. If this is your only filter, just know that you may have to clean them more often because of this. Coarser sponge catches large particles and allows smaller ones to pass through.
The power is terrific, and the water flow hasn’t slowed down at all despite the sponges showing signs of debris on them more than a week into use. I’m really pleased with the whole system. I also have a heater from this company, and am really happy with the value they offer their customers for the quality. At just over $26, as of this writing, this is an excellent choice.
First, this is a very good value for the money. It’s everything you need to keep the water clean, provides media to support beneficial bacteria growth, water movement, and sponge filters that also cover the water intake so itty-bitty swimmers don’t get sucked into the pump. I’m in the process of building out a macro mini saltwater reef, which is a lot harder to do than you might think. This AQQA filter is a bit too large for me to use in the aquarium, since I have a lot of space taken by live rock, but I used it in one of my prep tanks to keep the water moving on some freshly mixed saltwater. That tank is fairly shallow, so I had to lay the filter on its back. It was a little challenging to keep the air intake/vent tip above the water line, since I needed water as high as possible in that particular container. I couldn’t figure out how to reduce the output, though. I considered using this in my copepod tank, but that much air would be too much for them.
Overall, this thing really works great, and the pump is a lot quieter than the bubble pump I’m using for the copepods. I would love to see these guys make this filter pump incorporating clear plastic where possible, and white sponge. Even the small one takes up some room, and the black detracts from the beauty of the interior aquarium decor.
