  1. This filter has 3 stages that are easy to disassemble for cleaning.
    1) At the bottom is the inlet and right above it is a sponge for bacteria to grow and eat chemicals in the water.
    2) In the middle chamber is a bow-tied mesh bag of ceramic balls that serve the same purpose as the sponges, with another sponge right above it. Since the bag is not designed specifically for this device, the water doesn’t flow through it evenly, not that it matters because every surface in the tank will have bacteria on it.
    3) The top is the pump which can be above the water as long as the outlets are below the water.

The pump is quite powerful and has two outlets, one of which has an offshoot to connect the clear tube for the venturi valve to, which will provide aeration and thus eliminate the need for an air pump, tubing and air-stone. The longer of the two outlets can be plugged if you wish, and the venturi valve is also optional. If you use the valve, it should be above the water level and not in the aquarium; if not and there is a power outage water will leak out of the tube until its discovered.

Although their video says there’s activated carbon, it is not mentioned anywhere else and I didn’t see any. It would certainly be possible to put a pouch of activated carbon or maifan stone (etc.) inside of the filter, and this would make this a functionally complete filter unless you need a UV light. Without that extra media, however, your pets will have trouble. Having both sponges and ceramic balls is redundant and provides no extra benefit.

I have another filter like this but larger, with carbon, and it does a great job.

Make sure to clean the filter with tank or neutralized water, otherwise tap water which has chlorine in it will kill the beneficial bacteria.
