  1. Super quiet! Easy to assemble. I did have to remove part of the inner rim of my fish tank for it to fit properly but other than that, it works very well! No leaks.

  2. I ordered this filter because it doesn’t need to be primed like many hang on the back filters do. I like that it came partially assembled, but the instruction book didn’t give clear instructions on how to assemble the other pieces. Through looking at several photos on the ad, I was able to figure out where the regulator went, but it doesn’t seem to really serve any purpose. I also found by mistake that there is a small lever that will increase/decrease the intake and thus control the flow. I love how quiet the pump is and I do enjoy the sound of the trickling water as it reenters the tank. I have found that the intake “slots” get clogged very easily with duckweed and other decaying plant material. Perhaps this pump would be better suited for a tank that is not planted.

  3. Hang on back aquarium filter.y.
I was really excited about this filter, it not only looks and feels well made, and the filtering options are good.
You have 3 media compartments with included media. Having three filer compartments means that you can also mix and match the media to suite your application.
I was looking forward to using this filter on my angel fish tank but unfortunately it would not fit over the rim of my tank and there is no way to adjust it. This unit is suited to rimless fish tanks unless you want to try and modify the rim of your tank.
I really like everything about this filter apart from not being adjustable, due to this reason I would only recommend the filter if you have a rimless tank or are willing to modify the trim of your tank.

  4. This filter is complicated to assemble. I have set up many aquariums, and have been largely successful. This pump is difficult to assemble and mount on the tank.
Mine is functional, but it took a lot of tinkering with the pump to make it work. It looks okay, but it took a while to get it set up. The unit is a good value for the money but keep in mind the labor that you may spend in setting it up in a smaller tank. It should be easy to clean. I have mixed ideas about the quality. It is okay for a small sized tank.

  5. Edit to original review.
The part they call a regulator is just a dial that fits in the bottom of the part of the filter outside the tank. It levels the tank and reduces noise. Someone posted a video review of a similar filter and he clearly shows the part being inserted.

A second issue. I have a 10 gallon tank. Preparing it for a planted tank with several inches of substrate. I had to remove the optional piece to shorten the length. it’s still digging into the fluval and sand substrate. Wouldn’t recommend for a low tank.

Third issue. Not as quiet as originally. I took the cover off. It is now very quiet.

This is a Vine Review. I have ordered a wholly submerged filter which appears to be shorter. I’ll see if that works better in the 10 gallon tank. I may buy a 20 gallon high.

    Original Review.
    Pros.
Works fine. See my photos. New tank setup so brown water is from the tannins off my wood. I’m using the dark start method with no lighting.
The 3 stage filter media is already installed. Just click the pieces together, per the diagram.

    Cons.
No real directions. I followed the diagram.
The diagram shows a part called the regulator. I couldn’t figure out where it went. Not inserted. Filter still runs fine.
Cord should be longer. My tank is on a desk and my APC surge protector is under the desk. Not enough cord to establish a safe drip line.
It’s not the best construction, but for smaller tanks it seems to be fine. I got the 12 w and it is installed on a 10 gallon tank.

    Overall.
Although it runs fine and is very quiet, I still deducted a star due to the lack of directions, and a regulator part that doesn’t seem to fit anywhere. I wish sellers would include a one minute video on the description page.
